As simulators approach operational limitations due to evolving standards and system obsolescence, Simaero Engineering has delivered a focused solution by completing a full Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) upgrade on a legacy CAE Boeing 747 Full Flight Simulator in Yangzhou, China. The team demonstrated its expertise in modernizing a decades-old device, ensuring compliance with current regulatory and operational requirements.
The retrofit integrates Bihrle Applied Research’s StallBox module, enabling advanced aerodynamic modeling to support evidence-based UPRT. The upgrade scope includes full-stall behavior, icing effects, bounce landing dynamics, and gust wind responses, the critical factors necessary for delivering high-fidelity upset recovery scenarios.
“Some of the simulators we work with are older than today’s latest airline fleets,” says Julien Champs, Group Engineering & Technical Director at Simaero. “Yet with modern additions and smart software integrations, we can equip them to meet the training needs of tomorrow.”
Certified UPRT capabilities are no longer optional. With ICAO and EASA mandating advanced upset recovery in type rating and recurrent programs, simulator upgrades like this one are vital for operators looking to extend the utility of existing simulation infrastructure without compromising safety outcomes.
Set for certification in July, the B747 simulator’s upgrade reflects more than just a technical advancement, it demonstrates how experienced engineering teams can close the gap between legacy hardware and next-generation pilot training demands.
We sincerely thank our partners at Bihrle for their technical expertise and collaborative spirit throughout this successful integration.
